About This Tool

PDF Word Counter reads the selectable text layer in a PDF and returns a statistics-first summary: words, characters with and without spaces, pages counted, average words per page, estimated reading time, and per-page totals.

It is separate from PDF to Text, whose primary result is copyable or downloadable text, and Word Counter, which counts text you paste manually. This page is designed for checking a PDF directly without making a text file.

Word segmentation uses browser language-aware rules when available. Counts can differ from Microsoft Word or Adobe because PDFs may contain line fragments, headers, footers, hidden text, or unusual reading order. Scanned and image-only PDFs require OCR first.

How to Use

  1. Upload a PDF

Choose one PDF containing selectable text. The file is read locally in your browser.

  2. Choose pages

Count the complete PDF or enter a page range such as 1, 3-5, 8.

  3. Review the statistics

Check total and per-page word counts, characters, reading time, and pages without selectable text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the PDF word counter work?

It reads the existing selectable text layer from the pages you choose and applies language-aware browser word segmentation when available.

Can it count words in a scanned PDF?

Not until the scan has a text layer. Image-only pages are reported as having no selectable text and need OCR first.

Will the result exactly match Microsoft Word?

Not always. PDF reading order, line fragments, headers, footers, hidden text, and language segmentation can produce a different estimate.

Is the PDF uploaded?

No. Text extraction and counting run locally in your browser during normal use.
